The Butts Of Brothers:

Some of you may remember that I watch very little on tv when it actually airs. That is one of the reasons I am a bad capper of television. I love waiting and watching an entire season in a week or two when it is released on DVD. I will sometimes watch the first episode or two, then turn it off for the rest of the season. I just finished season 3 of Brothers & Sisters and look forward to it's return in a couple of weeks.

To me, Brothers and Sisters is one of televisions hidden gems. It somehow remains under the radar of most tv critics. It does not get the attention that Grey's Anatomy gets. It does not even get the attention Heroes and other shows get, although it certainly does get better ratings. Brothers and Sisters is a well written comic gem which features the talents of some of Hollywood's best. Watching Sally Field every week is a gift. Even though her movie roles have been hit and miss to me, she consistently delivers as Nora Walker. Field gets 'in the moment' of each scene and never lets go. Over the top now and then yes, but so is Nora, so it works.

Add Rachel Griffiths (so brilliant on Six Feet Under) who also does not get the attention she deserves. Her role on Brothers is not as 'out there' as on Six Feet Under, but she still delivers a powerhouse performances week in and week out. Matthew Rhys is also a standout and Calista Flockart proves she is more than just Ally McBeal, and she matches Field note for note in the comedy department.

The stellar acting continues with Ron Rifkin, Patricia Wettig and Dave Annable. Rob Lowe was also given some great scenes this past season.

Not sure if it is because at it's core, Brothers is a soap, damn well written one, but a soap none the less that stops critics from really giving it it's due. The writers balance the difficult task of high drama without being melodramatic beautifully. Brothers hits me emotionally, which very few shows do. They do it in small, beautiful ways. The big dramatic moments don't pack the punch simple interactions between family members around the dinner table are able to hit. Those Walker family dinners always deliver. I do question the hiring of Luke Grimes, although adorable, does not yet have the acting chops to match his co-stars. Maybe he will hit his stride this season.

If you have not watched Brothers and Sisters, get season 1 on DVD and immerse yourself in a well written, dramatic, emotional filled and hilarious family drama that I am sure will hook you!

To celebrate the new season, lets look at yet one more reason to give this show a look.

Unconvential Hunk of the Day: Hamish Linklater

'The New Adventures of Old Christine' has been on 4 or 5 years now. Not sure CBS really respects the show as it has been moved around so many times. I was never really drawn to the show, but lately I have been watching 'Big Bang Theory' and 'How I met Your Mother' and through watching these CBS comedies, I have been starting to watch the Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy. I have quite liked the past few episodes and plan on adding it to my tivo. I have always loved Wanda Sykes and the writing is much better than I had expected.

An added bonus of course is the adorable Hamish Linklater. Hamish plays Christine's brother and thier relationship is both interesting and risky for a prime time comedy. I remember Hamish from American Dreams but Hamish is also an accomplished Theatre actor with many theatre credits on his resume. The writers of 'Old Christine' also seem to enjoy putting his character Matthew in the bathtub, bathrobes and without a shirt as often as they can. Certainly one of many reasons to check out 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' if you have not already!

Kudo's to Robert Gant

Got to give a shout out to Robert Gant. Firstly the guy is absolutely gorgeous! Secondly, for those who have read this blog for awhile know that I have struggled with watching and liking 'Queer As Folk'. I have finally finished the series and my feelings are still hit and miss. Yes, I certainly enjoyed Sharon Gless, yes certainly I liked the skin, yes certainly there were some storylines and characters I got into. Overall though I still find the show hit and miss. Maybe it is that it's orginal characters are all pretty much just stereotypes. Not so much on the page, as it was not as jarring in the British version, but the US version almost seemed to pick every gay stereotype and shove them all in this one show. That does not mean that the actors were not effective, many were, but it also made much of the show hard to stomach for me. I am sure the groundbreaking things Queer As Folk was able to accomplish were dimished with the negativity the show got for promoting not only the best of, but the worst of the gay community. Maybe this made it realistic, I am still not convinced. (Btw: Randy Harrison is still not winning me over, but...he certainly is not as bad as I first wrote when starting to watch).

I did however find two characters and actors that I really enjoyed. I have talked about my love for the talented Dean Armstrong before, but I have not wrote much about Robert Gant before. At first I found his character a bit boring, but as his storyline went on, I found his character really grounded the show for me for awhile and really made Hal Sparks character a lot less annoying. Gant is a rare gay actor who has gone seemlessly between gay and straight roles without any muss and fuss. This is a tribute to his talent. I know this may not have been possible if he had been cast as Brian or was a bigger name in the business, but he certainly deserves kudo's for his great work not only on Queer As Folk but many other shows and movies.
