Neil Patrick Harris: Break A Leg!

As a television fan I look forward each year to the EMMY AWARDS! Usually though I tape so I can watch it quickly later with the FF button. Tonight I think I will actually watch as Neil Patrick Harris is the host. Neil did a great job on this years Tony Awards and we can only hope he belts out a musical number tonight as well! Break A Leg Neil!

Anyone watching Glee?

I have been so busy the last few weeks that I have not had time to catch much on tv. Last night I finally had time to sit down and watch the 2 aired episodes of Glee! I LOVE IT! So real, so well written, so fun. Firstly we get a weekly dose of Broadway hottie Matthew Morrison (above), but that is just the icing on this great show! If you have not caught it, get on board the Glee machine. With all the talk about 90210 and Melrose (come on, they are both CRAP). Glee is the only new teen drama to get excited about.

Kudo's to Kerr Smith and Dawon's Creek

A few weeks ago I was doing some research on stories of coming out in mainstream movies and televison. I watched several coming stories in movies and as well a few television shows which had a main character going through this sometimes difficult process.

I must say one of the best came from somewhere I did not expect, ‘Dawson’s Creek’. I had watched Dawson’s off and on through the years, but truthfully never really paid much attention. I know this story is old to some, but I had not realized the power it held until seeing it again. After re-watching the journey of Dawson’s Creek character Jack, I must give kudo’s to the shows writers and producers and of course the actor Kerr Smith. Jack’s journey hit close to home for me and as well mirrored that of many that I know.

Dawson’s did take some safe roads (which is to be expected on tv) by having Jack not exhibit any stereotypical gay characteristics (what are they anymore anyway...). They also had Jack good looking and a football star. I can forgive Dawson’s Creek for this as Kerr Smith is one of only a handful of actors on a television drama to play an openly gay character as a main cast memeber. The writers of Creek carefully had the audience get to know Jack, initially setting him up in a love triangle with Joey and Dawson. As this storyline evolved you could see Jack was struggling with who he was. Jack was not allowed to struggle privately however as a teacher at Cape Side hide shoved him out of the closet.

These scenes of Jack being forced to share his secret with the world with both heartbreaking and as well empowering. Actor Joshua Jackson was also great as Pacey, whose own struggles with school were mixed in with Jack’s storyline.

Kerr Smith did an outstanding job with the scenes put before him, especially effective were some of his scenes with tv dad (the wonderful and sadly missed David Dukes). To me it was refreshing that this coming out story was not just about Jack coming out to others, but as well Jack coming out to himself and accepting who he was. I only wish such mainstream storylines were featured on tv a decade or two ago when I was going through similar struggles. Kudo’s to Kerr Smith and those behind this groundbreaking story on Dawon’s Creek!

Save Sordid Lives!!!

I love 'Sordid Lives!'. I loved the movie created by the amazing Del Shores, and I love the tv show. I also love me a little Jason Dottley! Despite it's international success, Logo appears to have not renewed the show for another season! Write Logo and lets keep this show on the air!

R.I.P Mollie Sugden

When I was a kid, I was forced to watch old episodes British comedies on PBS with my parents. I hated it at the time, but at some point in my 20's I realized I loved some of them and began watching them on my own. 'Are You Being Served' was one of my favorites and Mollie Sugden was one of the reasons. Mrs. Slocombe and her pussy gave me many laughs over the years. R.I.P Mollie!

Just Because: The Comeback!

Just Because: I STILL MISS THE COMEBACK! If you have not watched the first and only season of Lisa Kudrow's brilliant 'The Comeback' what are you waiting for? I still hope at times someone will realize this show needs to get back on the air. 'The Comeback' was to me by far the best work of any actor that came off of 'Friends'. It was hilarious, painful and so well written. Is it not time for Valerie Cherrish to grace our tv screens once again!

Just Because: True Blood

One of my favorite new shows 'True Blood' started season 2 last night and Stephen Moyer is getting hotter and hotter. It took me awhile during season 1 to take to his character, but I am fully hooked! Caps via Superherofan, and check out his site HERE for more!

Kudo's to Grey's Anatomy

If you check out my blog on a regular basis you know I love Grey's Anatomy. I love a drama with a big cast I can escape into each week. Yeah it is soapy, yeah it has had it's ups and downs, but overall I always love an hour with Grey's. What makes Grey's so special is that it has an amazing cast that are always given moments. Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Kevin McKidd, Justin Chambers and Sandra Oh top my list of favorites on the show. I am also a big Izzy fan even though my feelings on the actress are hit and miss.

Grey's season finale sucked me in from start to finish. Even though I should have known who John Doe was, it took me completely by surprise. All the actors shown, especially Chambers who was written many great moments (give the man an Emmy nom!). Even though I have not enjoyed T.R Knight, I was caught up in his storyline. Any show that brings the great Liza Weil on also deserves bonus points! George was a favorite of mine in season 1 and 2 (til the writers and possibly Knight himself tried to make the character into something he was not).

The fans of this show are nuts though. The message boards are full of praise as well as loathing and hate. I guess this is the mark of a passionate fan base. I feel like I am walking into the Twilight Zone when I read some of the stuff written by the Mer and Der fans. There are truly fanatical. This show to me is not about Mer and Der, it is about them all and no matter who you like this past season, they all got a chance to shine.

Acting honors of the Week: A couple of McEmmy performances!

Well actually it was last week, but Justin Chambers and Kevin McKidd both blew me away in last week's episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' titled "Elevator Love Letter" written by the talented Stacy McKee.

Grey's gets so much flack for its soapy storytelling and cast dramas but it is such a great drama, so well acted, so well written (Izzy/George hook up aside). Grey's is also an actors showcase with Sandra Oh, Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Katherine Heigl and company putting out outstanding performance week after week. My least favorite characters and actors are Patrick Dempsey and T.R Knight but I will put up with them given how much I like the rest of the show. I am sure many viewers felt the highlight was Derek proposing to Meredith at the shows end, but I wish Meredith would tell the jerk to get a life and move on. To me, the meat of last weeks show were the storylines surrounding Owen and Christina and Alex and Izzie. (Alex and Meredith's scene was particularly effective, especially with the writing and the performances of Chambers and Pompeo.

Kevin McKidd was a smart addition to the cast and his storyline is both frightening and heartbreaking. Justin Chambers has always been my favorite in the cast and Alex is an amazing character. Just when I think the writers have underestimated Alex and Justin's appeal they give him material that he knocks out of the park, and last week Justin delivered in his scenes with Alex struggling to come to terms with Izzie's cancer. Bring on the McEmmy nominations!

Goodbye ER

ER ends a long and hugely successful run tonight. I LOVED ER it's first five or six seasons but stopped watching on a regular basis once most of the core cast had left and Dr. Carter was mostly featured away from the ER which I think most fans did not respond well to. I certainly tuned in from time to time and saw that the writing and acting was still top notch, but the magic for long time viewers was certainly gone. I began watching again this year for two reasons, Angela Bassett who rocks and the return of some old favorites. (The Anthony Edwards return Episode was a powerful hour of television). I will be watching tonight to say goodbye to a show that was a big part of the last decaded plus of my life! Goodbye ER.

Brandon Ruckdashel in 'The Lair'

Ok, so 'The Lair' is not exactly Shakespeare. There are however vampires, killer animals and plants, cute guys, many who have nude scenes, and of course one of my favorite actors Brandon Ruckdashel. I would not have checked out 'The Lair' if not for Brandon and with season 2 just out on DVD this week thought I would give it a plug. Brandon was in only a few episodes of season 2 and I do wish his character certainly would have been utilized more. That aside, 'The Lair' certainly was enjoyable 'popcorn' tv which you should check out.

As always, be sure to visit Brandon's great website HERE:

Just Because: Courtney Cox Arquette

'Friends' like most really successful tv shows often gets dismissed. When a show is a HUGE hit, some diminish the brilliance of the writing, the stories, the acting. I have been recently rewatching some early seasons of Friends and am enjoying more now than I did on the first run. Firstly because watching anything on DVD is better than on a network. The ability to watch as many or as few episodes as you want enhances the viewing pleasure.

Although I love all the Friends, when watching the first time my favorites were Lisa Kudrow and Matthew Perry. (I still morn the loss of 'The Comeback') In rewatching I have discovered the truly amazing work done by Courtney Cox Arquette. Courtney and 'Monica' really were core to the success of Friends. Courtney who I found somewhat annoying on 'Family Ties' grew over the 10 years of Friends into a great actress. Monica's storylines in the second viewing are my favorites. Courtney walked a fine line between Monica's neurosis and vulnerabilities. Never a one note character, Monica could be the strong stable and at the same time goofy and obsessive. Her romance with Chandler was a great way to move Monica from her hunt for love to a longing for family and children. Just wanted to throw a shout out to the talented Courtney. Jennifer gets the media attention, not to mention the EMMY, but the true actress of the Friends cast to me is Courtney Cox Arquette.
